Yes of course, I don't work on many 'passion projects' (on this project no one is getting paid) and I usually don't have any overheads when working on them, I don't rent a studio for example.
But if you're a good newbe editor don't underestimate your value. I'm way off tech topics of this forum so that's all I can say. If someone fixes your car, they expect to be paid COD. There's a fair amount of shady operators in this business, including major networks who think Net 120 is fine. It can interferes in the relationship, but it shouldn't. One thing that makes any self owned business hard is asking for money while being involved in the creative process. Most clients have more money than they want you to know about. But if you want to donate your time for your reel that's one thing. I get it, I paid serious dues doing script-to-screen cable spots for $350 in 1990 for a little company out of Philly called Comcast.
